Spring has sprung! Are you ready to get your garden going? Here are some great spring gardening tips to get you started on a road to a happy and healthy growing season!
1. Start gardening before hot weather
Hot weather is brutal for tender plants and definitely past the point of planning. Get started on your garden while the weather is still cool, or at least confused as Southern California’s often is in Spring. Prepare your soil, plan out your garden, plant fruit trees, shrubs and roses. The earlier you get started the more plant options you’ll have for your garden.
2. Help seedlings sprout by removing winter mulch.
Planting flowers or vegetables from seeds can be a very rewarding process. The first step is making sure the tender shoots will find sun and air. Winter mulch, or decaying vegetation layered to enrich soil, is dense. New shoots will find it difficult to penetrate mulch. Clean away the old stuff so seedlings have a chance to sprout.
3. Pull weeds while they are still small.
Weeding is often the most tedious part of gardening. Catching weeds while they’re still young means they have shallow roots and will be easy to remove. It also helps that you’ll be removing them before they have a chance to flower and spread seeds. Start weeding now so your summer garden will need minimal weeding.
4. Use egg shells as fertilizer.
Egg shells are rich in calcium carbonate and a great natural fertilizer. Let egg shells dry then try crushing them up in a blender and spreading onto your garden’s soil to enrich it.
5. Know what level of sun your garden gets and plant accordingly.
There are 3 different types of sun for plants shade, partial shade, and sun. Sun-loving plants will get sick and die in the shade. Shade-loving plants will fry in direct sun. If you are planting from seed, or transplanting potted plants, read the package or label to know what type of sun the plants need.
