It’s happened to all of us at some point. You tried your best to prevent those dreaded bugs from taking over your plants, but even your best efforts couldn’t keep them away. Here is a list of some of the most common critters that could end up on your plants:
4 Common Houseplant Pests
- The Mealy Bug. These bugs suck the life out of leaves and spread incredibly fast. hey are small (about 1-3mm) and have a characteristic loose, hairy and waxy cover used to build their nests. No part of the plant is immune to the attack of a mealy bug.
- Spider mites. These can be easily overlooked because of their small size. You will notice them most often while misting your plants. The mist highlights the webs the spider mites make. Signs of spider mites are yellow blotches on leaves that further yellow and fall. Spider mites love hot, dry conditions, so keeping your plants well-watered helps deter them.
- Whiteflies. If you’ve ever noticed a flurry of tiny white insects on your plants, you were looking at whiteflies. They are small, white, winged insects that suck sap from leaves of plants. The leaves of ingested plants may turn yellow, be twisted or stunted, wither and drop prematurely. Leaves may also be sticky with honeydew, a sugary solution excreted by the whiteflies. Sometimes a black fungus called sooty mold develops on the honeydew, and worsens the plant’s problem by blocking out light and interfering with photosynthesis.
- Aphids. These are also tiny, sucking insects that drain the life out of your house plants. Aphids are sucking insects, which consumes a lot of sap, causing leaves and stems to become distorted. They are pear-shaped and may be green, black, brown, red, pink, or some other color.
